Class requirements 

The updated class requirements define specific criteria for watertight cable transits within the construction regulations. Initially outlined in the unified requirements by IACS, the International Association of Classification Societies, these criteria are now covered by various classification societies under the umbrella of IACS, with minor differences between them. The objective is to ensure a documented and controlled standard of installation quality for watertight cable transits, spanning from initial construction through the lifecycle of the ship or MOU, mobile offshore unit.

Cable transit seal systems register

While certified sealing solutions are consistently utilized in demanding areas, the prioritization of installation quality, and subsequently safety performance, is not always upheld. Recognizing this challenge, class has introduced the mandate to establish a cable transit seal systems register for all watertight cable transits onboard new ships and MOUs. The register is to be established by the shipbuilder and maintained by the owner or operator, all with the aim of enhancing onboard safety.

IACS unified requirements

The following classification societies constitute IACS: American Bureau of Shipping, DNV-GL, Croatian Register of Shipping, Class NK, China Classification Society, Bureau Veritas, RINA – Registro Italiano Navale, Russian Maritime Register of Shipping, Lloyd’s Register, Indian Register of Shipping, Polish Registry of Shipping and Korean Register. Their unified requirements set forth standards applicable to vessels and MOUs contracted for construction after July 1, 2021. The regulations stress the criticality of monitoring watertight cable transits throughout the lifespan of a ship or offshore unit as well as the importance of having a cable transit seal systems register to manage these crucial components.
