It has become crucial to the global economy to protect and seal the digital infrastructure. To explore the subject a bit further, Digital Infra Network’s development director Seb Auzonne interviewed Rich Story, the US technical lead for data center applications at Roxtec.

Digital Infra Network is working to enable a sustainable digital transformation. In the video interview with Rich Story, they highlight the importance of physical protection and security expertise for data centers. Rich Story explains how Roxtec mechanical seals secure pathways for cables, pipes, and conduits, often in critical areas of the facility that provide power and connectivity. The seals protect walls from the weather and maintain a fire rating. They are also openable to enable future expansion.

“We primarily protect against water and fire damage, but we also provide weathertightness, airtightness and physical security,” says Rich Story. “We also act as a strategic partner, including support during engineering, construction, and operations phases.”

Training and documentation

On the construction side, Roxtec provides site surveys, and puts together bid packages for the contractors before going out and providing onsite training and submittals for those projects.

“Between the construction and the operations phases, we provide commissioning documentation, as-built drawings, and inspection services.”

Sealing all the way

Rich Story also explains that Roxtec solutions cover many applications within power and connectivity.

“On the power side, it can be anything from the pathway from the substation, through volts into the initial gear outside, to providing seals on exterior equipment. In terms of connectivity, on the fiber side, we seal around the inner duct, and as it comes out of the vaults, we can prevent humidity and gases from entering the building. Once it is inside, we can seal the power and fiber in exterior walls, creating a layer of physical security where we can delineate security zones.”

When asked about customers’ concerns regarding climate change, Rich Story says:
“Engineers working on data centers are specifying their requirements down to how penetrations into the building are sealed, so we are seeing more of a focus on pathways.”
