Best practice for sealing in the construction of a medium voltage log

Best practice for sealing in the construction of a medium voltage log

The engineers of Kimberly-Clark de México tried several putty-based seals, but water and rodents kept on entering the underground pipelines. Then they turned to Roxtec – and got a safe and secure solution.

Personal care product producer Kimberly-Clark experienced the problems with flooding and pests when constructing new logs to the medium voltage electrical substation at their plant in the state of Tlaxcala. It was important to implement better sealing practices to ensure safety and continuous operation.

“We wanted to assure maximum sealing,” says Sergio Ulloa, supervisor engineer of Kimberly-Clark.

The new standard

Roxtec proposed Roxtec UG™ seals for underground applications – a robust mechanical sealing system consisting of stainless steel and rubber parts. It provided excellent protection and enabled Kimberly-Clark to build and efficiently seal the new pipeline banks that were to replace the existing connections.

“The use of Roxtec seals in all our logs helps us avoid water leaks and maintain the desired tightness. Therefore, Roxtec seals are now our standard,” says Sergio Ulloa.

Sealing the site

Roxtec’s way of understanding needs and requirements and of working with early design and consultancy also simplified the civil construction process. By integrating Roxtec knockout sleeves when building the logs, Kimberly-Clark was able to ensure tightness before PVC pipe installation and cable routing.

Training and follow-up

Roxtec provided installation training, supervised the installation work and even verified the installation quality after completed sealing.

The problems with flooding and harmful animals were successfully solved. As of today, Kimberly-Clark has not reported any deviation.

I recommend Roxtec for cable sealing in trenches, walls or cabinets.
Victor Manuel Flores Rodríguez, project engineer, Kimberly-Clark
