Seals for a safe landing

Protecting instrument landing systems in the Netherlands.

Seals for a safe landing

Within the Dutch airspace, one of the busiest and most complex in the world, Air Traffic Control the Netherlands (LVNL) ensures the safe and efficient flow of air traffic. LVNL, headquartered at Schiphol-Oost, has the ambition to be the best air traffic control in the world when it comes to safety, people, and reliability. This ambition is reflected in all the work of the more than a thousand LVNL employees.

One of them is Patricia van der Kruijs, who as Senior Engineer Building Management & Maintenance is responsible for the technical maintenance of all LVNL buildings. She has been working at LVNL for 15 years. For her, care for quality in every detail is evident, especially in the critical infrastructure for air traffic safety: “It just has to be really good.”

Instrument landing system

LVNL is responsible for the maintenance and renewal of the instrument landing system (ILS) at Schiphol Airport. An ILS supports the pilot during landing; in all visibility conditions the pilot must be able to rely on the operation of the system.

“An ILS mainly consists of two parts, a localizer and a glide path installation. In short, the glide slope installation ensures that the aircraft lands at the correct angle, and the localizer ensures that the aircraft lands in the middle of the runway,” says Patricia van der Kruijs.

Safe and reliable

“We always deal with cables that enter a building underground, for example from the ILS antennas to the cable distribution station or antenna box. The equipment must be well protected, especially against ingress of water. Because we need to make sure it is water-proof and safe, we use sealing solutions from Roxtec,” says Patricia van der Kruijs, and continues:

“We have used other solutions in the past, but they were not sufficient. We prefer to just do it right – and that’s with Roxtec. In all our systems, by the way, not only in the ILS, but also in all LVNL control towers, for example.”

An ILS must work reliably in all weather conditions. LVNL asked an independent inspection body to carry out a comparative test of cable penetrations. This showed that the Roxtec sealing solutions help limit disruptions that can arise as a result of lightning strikes.

Future collaboration

The renewal of the ILS at Schiphol Airport is a multiyear project. Roxtec is proud of the many years of successful cooperation with LVNL and expects this to continue in the future. “It just has to be really good.” says Patricia van der Kruijs.

We prefer to just do it right – and that’s with Roxtec.
