Securing an HVDC converter station in the USA

Roxtec seals protect against fire, water and lightning strike effects.

Securing an HVDC converter station in the USA

Siemens specified Roxtec sealing solutions for the cable entries in an HVDC converter station in the USA. Construction company Haugland Energy used Roxtec according to specifications and added Roxtec seals for underground cables and cooling pipes. Roxtec provided support – including installation training.

"It is wonderful to have an engineered cable sealing solution,” says Joe Mineo, Project Manager at Haugland Energy. "I have seen the mess when people use other solutions like spray foam."

Electrical safety and spare capacity

Roxtec GH BG™ transits for sealing, bonding and grounding were used for a dozen control cable penetrations in the sandwich panel to act as a firestop and protect against the risk of downtime due to water ingress, rodents, EMI or lightning strikes. The transits were sealed but not filled with cables, so that they can offer spare capacity for additional cables and enable future growth. The HVDC converter station is built to receive the wind generated power from an offshore wind farm and convert it from DC, direct current, to AC, alternating current, for the grid.

Keeping the basement dry

Coastal environments are challenging when it comes to humidity. During the construction, Haugland Energy cast Roxtec knock-out sleeves into the concrete foundations to temporarily seal fiberoptic conduit entries from water ingress underground. Then, when it was time to run the fiber into the building, they installed Roxtec RS UG™ (underground) seals in the sleeves.

Transit installation training

Roxtec representatives provided installation training to help the installers of Haugland Energy work with the seals in a correct and efficient manner. This was really appreciated:
“The installations look neat and professional. The installers were proud of their work,” says Anthony Lopez, Project Executive at Haugland Energy. “I believe Roxtec ticks all the boxes regarding our requirements. I would certainly recommend others to use Roxtec seals.”
