Roxtec transits protect the world’s first LNG-powered oil tanker

Roxtec sealing solutions are used on the crude oil tanker powered by liquefied natural gas.

Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries chose to apply the Roxtec RS sealing solution to the world's first LNG-powered 114K tanker, ordered by Russia's Sovcomflot. LNG propulsion has so far been applied to small- and mid-sized vessels, but this is the first time ever that the concept has been applied to large-sized vessels. The ship will be chartered by Shell and operated by the Green Funnel Project.

Renowned shipyard

Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries boasts the world's fourth largest shipbuilding capability at Samho-eup, Yeongam-gun, Chonnam in South Korea. An affiliate of Hyundai Heavy Industries, the company is one of the world leaders in shipbuilding and marine technology as well as one of the country's representative shipyards. All products that are used at the shipyard are certified by the Bureau Veritas Korea.

Certified by RMRS

Considering the Russian ship owners, Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries was required to build the ship also in accordance with the requirements of the RMRS, Russian Maritime Register of Shipping. Since Roxtec transits have already been certified by the RMRS, the shipyard was able to meet that challenge.

Prompt and solid support

There can be difficulties in applying new solutions instead of sticking to the existing products that have been proven over time by the shipbuilding industry. Any change in materials and job routines requires an agreement and collaboration with various departments. Roxtec helped out by providing information on reports, certificates and solutions for fire protection, water-tightness, air-tightness, temperature resistance, explosion protection, and durability, and thereby earned trust from the related departments.

Why choose Roxtec?

  • Certified by all major classification societies
  • No need for insulation in fire class A-0 for the selected Roxtec solution
  • Sealing solutions tailored for customers
  • Specialized technology/field support team
