Roxtec has provided reliable sealing solutions for the CNOOC Lufeng Oilfield Group Clean Energy Power Supply Retrofit Demonstration Project in the South China Sea's eastern oilfields. With proven offshore sealing technology and comprehensive lifecycle support, Roxtec contributes to the implementation of China’s deepwater energy strategy.

As offshore wind power accelerates toward deepwater, large-capacity, and high-reliability applications, China's deepwater floating wind industry is entering a critical phase of large-scale development. Floating wind platforms are exposed to harsh conditions, including salt spray, high humidity, strong winds and waves, and severe corrosion. The safety, stability, and long-term performance of the cable and pipe sealing systems used directly determine the operational reliability of these platforms throughout their lifecycle.

Challenges in harsh marine environments

The CNOOC Lufeng Oilfield Group Clean Energy Power Supply Retrofit Demonstration Project is China's first deepwater tension leg platform (TLP) wind demonstration project. It is also one of the world's farthest offshore and deepest-water large-capacity floating wind platforms. The platform features a 16 MW turbine, is designed to withstand typhoon winds of up to level 17 and is built using an efficient block prefabrication and final assembly approach.

The sealing system must meet the following stringent requirements:

  • High environmental adaptability. Long-term resistance to salt spray, high humidity, intense vibration, and seawater corrosion, with stable performance and no leakage or aging.
  • Strict protection standards. Compliance with offshore engineering and classification society requirements for fire resistance, watertightness, gas-tightness, and vibration resistance to ensure overall safety of electrical systems and floating structures.
  • Efficient and convenient installation. Fast onsite installation to support a tight project schedule and high assembly precision requirements.
  • Built-in spare capacity. Flexible upgrade capability for future expansion of the platform's electrical system without the need for secondary openings or modifications.

Based on the specific conditions and requirements of the deepwater TLP, Roxtec provided a complete solution covering key transits such as electrical cabinets, cabinet bottom entries, bulkheads, and decks. The modular design ensures efficient and reliable protection:

  • Roxtec rectangular transits – suitable for load-bearing structures. The rounded design reduces stress concentration and cracking risk. The transits with sealing modules meet the high structural and sealing standards of offshore environments.
  • Roxtec round seals – suitable for single or multiple cables and pipes. They adapt to cables and pipes of different sizes, combining easy installation, space efficiency, and convenient maintenance. These transits are ideal for newbuild, retrofit, and maintenance applications in deepwater environments.

Efficient collaboration ensures 10-day early completion

From sealing solution consultation and product supply to onsite support, the Roxtec China team worked closely with the CNOOC project team, delivering efficient responses throughout the project:

  • Fast solution deployment: Building on long-term cooperation with CNOOC, Roxtec quickly matched project requirements and developed a suitable solution.
  • Efficient delivery assurance: Products were delivered on schedule in line with project milestones, supporting the tight construction sequence of block prefabrication and final assembly.
  • Full technical support: Onsite installation training and technical services optimized construction procedures, reduced installation complexity, and ensured quality and efficiency.

Thanks to collaborative efforts, the welding of the floating structure of the Lufeng project was completed 10 days ahead of schedule, with all 21 girth welds passing quality inspections. The stable performance of the Roxtec sealing system helped meet key project milestones.
